Rug care can differ from rug-to-rug, depending on size, material, construction etc. So, here are a few general tips, that can help extend the life of your rug, and protect that investment from wear, tear, and stains.

Vacuuming will remove those dirt and dust particles that can stain your rug, and leave it looking drab. It will also help reduce any allergens in your home.
We recommend vacuuming at least once a week, to keep it looking fresh and clean.
If you have a handmade, loop-pile or textured rug, it's recommended that you don't use a brush head attachment, or motorised power brush, as this can damage or pull the fibres. Instead, stick with the standard head, and only give it a gentle vacuum.
If you do manage to spill something on your rug, you need to remove the stain as soon as possible, before it sets in. The best form of removal is to use an absorbent material, like paper towels, or a white cloth. Its important to never rub a spill, always blot the stain to dry and lift out any liquids.
Some stains, can be tougher than others to remove, so if you do find you can’t get that pesky stain out, then it’s best to contact a rug cleaning specialist, or search online, on how to remove the specific stain. Be careful when using certain cleaning products on your rug, and we recommend testing it first in a corner, or non visible part of the rug, to make sure it doesn't effect the fibres, or discolour it. And remember to always stick to the manufacturer instructions on how to use.
For general cleaning, you can find products that can help give your rug a "lift", at your local hardware or supermarket. But, we do recommend getting your rug professional cleaned, buy a reputable rug or carpet cleaner, at least once a year. Remember to get a quote from them prior, as professional cleaning can be quite expensive.
It's probably not something you ever think about doing, but rotating your rug is a great way to extend its life. You may find that certain parts of your rug get more traffic, and therefore more wear and tear than the opposite side, so the simple task (or sometimes not quite so simple if you have furniture on it!) of rotating your rug, will do wonders!
If your living space gets lots of sunlight, then this can cause some fading in certain areas, so another great reason to rotate your rug regularly. Alternatively, if you get an outdoor rug that is UV resistant, you shouldt find the need to rotate it.
We recommend rotating your rug every 3 to 6 months. Make the rotation part of your regular household routine at the change of the seasons, so that you don't forget!
Rugs that are handwoven, including natural fibre rugs such as wool or jute, have their own extra care needs to consider. Here are few helpful tips to look out for:
Shedding - Your natural fibre rugs will shed, it's part-and-part of owning a handmade rug. Often you'll find that the new rugs will produce fluff as a result of loose fibres that remain in the rug after the manufacturing process. With regular vacuuming, this will reduce over time.
Sprouting - Occasionally, loose fibres will rise above the pile surface. This is not a fault, just a characteristic of woven and hand-tufted rugs. These loose yarns can be carefully trimmed, or pushed/looped back thru the pile.
Pilling - Similar to your favourite jumper, pilling can occur due to wear and tear, from traffic, moving of furniture, vacuuming or other mechanical agitation. If you do have a small area of pilling, you can carefully trim with scissors.
